Zechariah 14: All Nations Will Worship God

Zechariah 14: All Nations Will Worship God

Collin Leong. March 18, 2026

(v1-21) The Coming Day Of The Lord

(v1-3) Behold, a day is coming for the LORD, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the house plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.

Exp: This prophecy is about the future of Israel, during the great tribulation, described in Revelation. Though Israel will be taken by the Romans in 70 AD, it's only one nation against Israel. Here is says "all the nations", referring to the major global conflict against Israel and against God. (Rev 16:14-16; Ezek 38-39 - Appendix for quote).

The description of what happened to Jerusalem is proven during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. They killed about 1,200 people, with over 251 individuals abducted and taken into Gaza. They raped many women as well.

(v4) On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.

Exp: The Lord will land on Mount of Olives when He return again, the same place where he ascended to heaven and will return "in the same way." (Acts 1:9–12). Note that the temple's Eastern Wall is on the west side of Mount Olives, where the East Gate (or Golden Gate) is located. The East Gate was sealed by Suleiman the Magnificent. (See Appendix for the history.) If the split is from east to west, it will run into the the East Gate, and it will break the seal. Most scholars interpret that Jesus will enter the temple from the East Gate, as God has said that the East Gate "shall remain shut... no one shall enter by it, for the LORD... has entered by it." (Ezek 44:1-2) Only Jesus, the triune God, can enter into it when He returns.

(v5) And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azai. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

Exp: Azai is further west compared to where the temple was. There were no direct recording in scripture of the earthquake during Uzziah's days. However, Amos 1:1 confirmed it, saying: “The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.” The Jews knew what Zechariah is referring to.

Zechariah said that the LORD, his God will come, and all the holy ones with Him. This mirrors what Rev 19:13-14 said: "He is clothed in a robe dipped inb blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses."  This is Jesus returning to earth with the "Holy Ones" who are often interpreted as Christians who are in heaven. Jude 14-15 says: “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment…” Here, the holy ones are portrayed as witnesses to the Lord’s judicial action.

(v6-7) On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the LORD, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

Exp: Other verses that implies that same are found in Joel 2:31, Amos 8:9, Isa 24:23, Matthew 24:29, and Rev 6:12-13. (See Appendix for the quotes.). v7 says the day is know to the LORD, exactly what Jesus said in Matt 24:36: “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”

v7 also says that "at evening time there shall be light."  According to other scriptures, this will happen in the new creation where God Himself is the source of light (Isaiah 60, Revelation 21 - See Appendix for quotes). It foreshadows Christ as the Light of the world (John 8:2), whose coming dispels darkness even at its deepest point.

(v8) On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

Exp: The "eastern sea" refers to the Dead Sea, and the "western sea" refers to the Mediterranean Sea. In Ezekiel 47:8-10, it says that the water flows from eastern region (probably from the temple) into the (dead) sea, and the water will become fresh, and there will be many fish. According to Revelation, this flowing water will happen after the 1000 years rule of Christ on earth, when the earth is destroyed, and the "New Jerusalem" comes down from heaven. Revelation 22:1-2 says: "...  the river of the water of life, ...flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city."  Based on these two scripture, the water will flow out during the 1000 years of Jesus's reign, as well as the new river on the new earth. (See appendix for full quotes)

(v9) And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.

Exp: Revelation 11:15 says “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” Daniel 7:14 also says “And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion…”

There will "one God" - means that He is the only God everyone will worship. It echoes the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” His name is “one” means His identity will be universally confessed without distortion. No competing names, idols, or false worship—only the LORD’s name will be honored.

(v10-11) The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem.  But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses. And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.

Exp: In v10, the prophecy envisions a great leveling of the land around Jerusalem: from Geba in the north to Rimmon in the south, the terrain becomes a plain. Geba is 10km north of Jerusalem, and Rimmon is 56km south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, however, remains elevated, from Gate of Benjamin (northern gate) to "former gate" (likely the old gate on the north wall), to Corner Gate (northwestern corner of the city wall - mentioned in 2Kings 14:13). The "Tower of Hananel" is northeast corner of the wall (Neh 3:1, Jer 31:38), and King's Winepresses is the Southern part of the city.

The city’s boundaries are described using its gates and towers, marking a full perimeter: north (Benjamin Gate), west (Corner Gate), east (Tower of Hananel), and south (winepresses). Around Jerusalem, the land flattens, but the city itself stands out like a raised citadel. This is probably the result of the earth splitting in v4

(v12) And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mount.

Exp: This description of the suffering of the enemies of Israel could be symbolic, or literal. If it's literal, this is similar to what the a nuclear bomb can do. Their skin and soft tissues will "melt" or disintegrate through intense thermal radiation. The thermal radiation causes what is known as nuclear flash burns, within a few kilometers away from ground zero. (In ground zero, the body will vaporize). Survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki described skin "melting" off their bodies and hanging in strips from their fingertips like wet rags. This is actually the outer layers of skin (epidermis) separating from the underlying tissue due to massive, instantaneous heat absorption. Revelation also describe something similar to large missiles coming down on earth - Rev 6:12-13; 8:7-11; 16:18-21; 18:8-10. (See Appendix for the quotes)

(v13) And on that day a great panic from the LORD shall fall on them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other.

Exp: The terror God place on them will induced confusion, and they will fight against each other, instead of against Israel. This has happened before: Judges 7:22 (Gideon’s victory): The LORD caused Midianites to turn their swords against one another. 1 Samuel 14:20: Philistines struck each other in confusion. Revelation 17:16: The beast’s allies turn against Babylon, showing similar divine orchestration of self-destruction. Just as the plague in v12 consumes their bodies, the panic in v13 consumes their unity. Both are forms of divine judgment.

(v14-15) Even Judah will fight at Jerusalem, And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected, gold, silver and garments in great abundance. And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.

Exp: The plague will fall on all the surrounding nation and killed the animals as well. Judah (the Jews) will fight to defend Jerusalem, and they will be victorious and own the assets of the surrounding Arab nations, who are richest nations the world.

(v16-19) Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, there will be no rain on them. And if the family of Egypt does not go up and present themselves, then there shall be no rain for them; there shall be the plague with which the LORD afflicts the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths. This shall be the punishment to Egypt and all the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths.

Exp: Despite the nations being enemy of God and Jerusalem, God still asked them to go Jerusalem for the Feasts of Booths (Sukkot). Sukkot celebrates God’s provision and presence, recalling Israel’s wilderness journey in temporary shelters. In Torah, Sukkot is explicitly called “the Feast of Ingathering” and “the Feast of Rejoicing” (Leviticus 23:40; Deuteronomy 16:14–15). It is the most joy-filled of Israel’s feasts, marked by singing, dancing, and thanksgiving. The booths symbolize God’s presence with His people in the wilderness. In the eschatological vision, this expands to all nations experiencing His dwelling forever.

What about the other 6 feasts? There are many suggestions. My opinion is that they are not needed anymore, because Christ's death and resurrection has fulfilled all their requirements. (See Appendix for details.) Only Sukkot is necessary as God's provision and presence with us is for eternity.

Why did God warn the nations with dryness and plagues if they did not go up to Jerusalem? In the Torah, blessings and curses are tied to obedience (Deuteronomy 28). Zechariah envisions all nations acknowledging God’s kingship. Refusing to join is not neutral—it’s rebellion against the King. The warning isn’t meant to crush joy but to guard it. By insisting nations participate, God ensures that the festival remains universal, not fractured by selective obedience.

(v20-21) And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, "Holy to the Lord." And the pots in the house of the LORD shall be as the bowls before the altar. And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy the the LORD of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them. And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the LORD of hosts on that day.

Exp: The phrase “Holy to the Lord” was originally engraved on the high priest’s forehead plate (Exod 28:36). Here, even ordinary items—bells on horses, cooking pots—bear the same inscription. This signals that holiness will no longer be confined to the temple or priesthood; all of life, even mundane objects, will be consecrated to God. The boundary between “sacred” and “ordinary” collapses: everything in Jerusalem and Judah participates in worship. The statement “no longer a trader in the house of the Lord” (or “Canaanite,” depending on translation) points to the removal of corruption, profiteering, or foreign intrusion in worship.

Key Messages

The overall theme of Zechariah 14 is the climactic day of the Lord, when God decisively intervenes to establish His reign over all the earth. The chapter portrays both judgment and restoration: nations gather against Jerusalem, but the Lord Himself fights for His people. Cosmic upheaval accompanies His coming, leading to the transformation of the land and the establishment of universal worship. Ultimately, holiness permeates every aspect of life, as God’s kingship is acknowledged worldwide. In short, Zechariah 14 points forward to the final victory of God, the universal reign of Christ, and the sanctification of all creation.

  • It points to the ultimate reality where God’s holiness permeates all creation.

Appendix:

1. The East Gate

Suleiman the Magnificent (1494–1566) was the 10th and longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, ruling from 1520 to 1566. He was a Sunni Muslim. He conquered Belgrade (1521), Rhodes (1522), and much of Hungary (1526).  His Empire stretched from Hungary to Iran, and from Crimea to North Africa and the Indian Ocean. At least 25 million subjects under his rule.

Suleiman is the one who sealed the Golden Gate in 1541 to prevent the Jewish Messiah from entering through it, since Jewish expectation was that the Messiah would come via the East Gate. He ordered the gate sealed with stone and mortar. He also established a Muslim cemetery in front of the gate, reinforcing the barrier, because Jewish priests (kohanim) are prohibited from entering cemeteries. The scriptural backdrop is Ezekiel 44:1–2, which says the East Gate is shut because the Lord entered through it.

Ezekiel 44:1–2: “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it. Therefore it shall remain shut.”

But only Jesus, who is the triune God, can enter into the Eastern Gate when He returns.

3. Verses Parallel To v1-3

a) Rev 16:14-16 - For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

b) Ezek 38:18-39:6 - Gog leads a coalition (including Persia, Cush, Put, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah) to attack Israel. God’s wrath is stirred, leading to a great judgment. The Lord brings earthquakes, chaos, and destruction upon Gog and his armies. Their weapons fail, and they fall on the mountains of Israel, becoming food for birds and beasts. God sends fire on Magog and on distant coastlands, showing His power beyond Israel’s borders. Through this decisive act, both Israel and the nations will know that the Lord is holy and sovereign.

4. Verses Parallel To v6-7

a) Joel 2:31“The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.”

(b) Amos 8:9“On that day, declares the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.”

(c) Isaiah 24:23“Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed; for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders.”

(d) Matthew 24:29“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”

(e) Revelation 6:12–13“When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth…”

f) Isaiah 60:19–20“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light…”

g) Revelation 21:23–25“And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb… and there will be no night there.”

h) John 8:12“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

5. Verses Parallel To v8

a) Ezekiel 47:8-10.“And he said to me, ‘This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. … Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea.’”

b) Revelation 22:1–2. “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

6. Verses Supporting Nuclear War in v12

a) Revelation 6:12–14 (Sixth Seal): A great earthquake, the sun turns black, the moon like blood, stars fall, and the sky recedes like a scroll. The “sky rolling up” has been compared to the mushroom cloud effect.

b) Revelation 8:7–11 (Trumpets): Hail and fire mixed with blood thrown to the earth, burning a third of the trees and grass; a blazing mountain thrown into the sea; a star called Wormwood falls, poisoning waters. These images resemble fiery impacts, massive destruction, and contamination.

c) Revelation 16:18–21 (Seventh Bowl): A colossal earthquake, islands vanish, mountains collapse, and hailstones fall. The scale of devastation is beyond ordinary natural disasters.

d) Revelation 18:8–10: Babylon judged in “one hour” with fire and destruction—sudden devastation that some readers see as parallel to modern weapons.

7. Why The Other 6 Feast Is No Longer Needed (v16-19)

v16-19 says that God wants all the nations to go to Jerusalem each year to celebrate Feast of Tabernacle (Sukkot). But there is no mention of the other 6 feasts. I believe it is no longer required as Jesus have fulfilled and completed them:

  • Passover → fulfilled in Jesus’ sacrificial death as the Lamb.

  • Unleavened Bread → his sinless body laid in the tomb.

  • Firstfruits → his resurrection as the “firstfruits” of those who sleep.

  • Pentecost (Weeks) → the Spirit poured out, the first harvest of the nations.

  • Trumpets → often linked to the future return of Christ.

  • Day of Atonement → his once-for-all atoning sacrifice.

From this perspective, the first six festivals are “completed” in Jesus’ earthly mission and redemptive work, while Sukkot uniquely stretches forward into eternity. It celebrates God’s provision and presence, not just historically but eschatologically—“tabernacling” with humanity forever (Revelation 21:3).
